The story of
"10 Dead Gals You Should Know"

This literary portrait gallery is borne of two strong convictions: that history matters, and that women matter.

After completing 10 Dead Guys You Should Know, topping the list of most frequently asked questions was undoubtedly, ‘when are you writing the companion volume – the one devoted to the lives of noteworthy Christian women?’ 10 Dead Gals You Should Know is the response to those perfectly reasonable questions. This was a project we felt compelled to undertake – to not write a sequel would be to leave our task half-finished.

In many ways, our aspirations for both collections are identical. If our assemblage of dead guys was intended to encourage both men and women in their faith, then our desire is that the ‘gals’ will do precisely the same. In other words, this isn’t a book only for women – it’s a book for everyone about women, whom God has used to accomplish His purposes in this world. We believe that women matter. While many of their stories have been lost to history – or even remained untold – there is a great need to recover what we can. We’re convinced that women matter because they matter to God. We believe women are integral, invaluable, worthy co-contributors in society and to God’s plan and mission for the world.

In her famous 1929 essay ‘A Room of One’s Own,’ Virginia Woolf describes the myriad of obstacles that have historically stood in the way of women’s voices being heard. Our desire is to furnish these very different women with ten rooms of their own, in order that we might profit from hearing their voices anew or afresh. Drinking from the deep well of the past inspires and equips us to critically engage – and empathise – with the world around us so we can live fruitfully.

For all of their differences, every one of these women has left an indelible legacy on our collective, intergenerational Christian consciousness. Each is worth knowing in their own right; none were a ‘plus-one’ in a man’s tale. ‘Speed-dating’ each of these ‘dead gals’ has been a joy for both of us. To know someone’s story is a privilege; to have the opportunity to share it is even better.
